Bussy-Rabutin, Chateau de
Gilded exile
Easily missed, but an intriguing historical footnote, the original château was rebuilt in 1649 by Roger de Bussy-Rabutin. He was banished to the country by Louis XIV as punishment for his satirical commentaries on court affairs, particularly those relating to the king and Marie de Mancini. During his exile, he decorated the house from top to bottom with contemporary portraits: there are 25 women onlookers in his bedchamber, including Mesdames de Sévigné and Maintenon.
