Caserta
Oppressive grandeur
A palace as grand as Versailles, built by neo-classicist Vanvitelli for the megalomaniac Neapolitan Bourbons. It has 1,200 rooms, 34 staircases, 1,800 windows and four courtyards with statuary and furnishings of suitable richness. The beauty of the park, pools, cascades and fountains relieves the oppressive grandeur of the building. It is a sort of dream landscape with great trees, waterways and rustic buildings. An English garden of flowery glades, intimate paths and arbours is said to be the finest in Italy. A minibus is available to take you round the park.
