Cossack
Once the biggest local ports
On the coast 680 km north east of Carnarvon, just off the North West Coastal Highway. This ‘historic ghost town’ was once the biggest port along this part of the coast. Pearl fishers, pioneers, gold prospectors and others who had simply lost their way (in life or on the globe) would all put in at Tien Tsin (as it was known in those days). You can still see the Pioneer Cemetery, part of which is given over to the graves of Japanese pearl divers. Many of the buildings here are more than 100 years old, and used to be chained to the ground to stop them becoming airborne during cyclones. The Courthouse contains a museum which explains the history of the place, and the Post Office is an art gallery. At present this so-called ghost town is undergoing a restoration programme which rather gives the lie to its description. Anyway, even if it is now spookless, it has some fine beaches and there’s an interesting Historic Walk.
