Engulfed by dunes
700 km west of Norseman on the Eyre Highway. A lonely spot just 12 km from the border with South Australia. The original coastal settlement has been engulfed by sand dunes, and all you can see are its chimneys and the old jetty. The dunes are a fine sight. Nearby is the derelict Old Telegraph Station, which was set up in 1877. Other sights include the Koonalda Cave, dangerous unless you are a knowledgeable caver; a concrete sperm whale; and the famous sign which indicates the awesome distances to other (more or less) civilized spots on the globe – a time-honoured photo opportunity.
West of here along the highway are the spectacular arbor Cliffs, mile upon mile of one of the world’s most desolate coastlines.
