Freycinet Peninsula
Walking trails and wildlife
Midway down east coast. The peninsula contains a national park, which is entered by way of Coles Bay, a small fishing town on the edge of Great Oyster Bay. Nearby there are some spectacular red granite cliffs called The Hazards, which rise 300 m sheer from the sea.
The peninsula national park has several fine walking trails, where you’re likely to encounter all kinds of interesting wildlife. An hour’s walk brings you to the spectacular white sandy beach at Wineglass Bay. There’s a campsite at Cooks Beach (see www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=3363). If you want to camp somewhere really remote, try Schouten Island, off the end of the peninsula. (To get here, ask the fishermen at Coles Bay.)
