Franklin-Lower Gordon Wild Rivers National Park
World-class white-water rafting
South east of Strahan, which is on the mid-west coast. The easiest way to see this area of mountains, rivers and unspoiled rainforest (see www.parks.tas.gov.au/?base=3937) is from the Lyell Highway which links Hobart and Strahan. From here you can follow trails into the wilderness and look down over the rivers.
These rivers provide some of the best and most challenging white-water rafting in the world. Adrenalin freaks can apply to Fraklin River Rafting (www.franklinrverrafting.com).
The major feature of this wilderness is Frenchman’s Cap, which rises to over 1,400 m, with a sheer 500-m-cliff to the summit. Inevitably, this too attracts hardy outdoor types – and that’s an understatement. It’s a mere five days and 55 km to the summit. The best way to see this spot, and the rivers, is by air from Strahan.
