Gippsland and Gippsland Lakes
Inland waterways, lakes and lagoons
150 km north east of Wilsons Promontory. This large system of inland waterways, lakes and lagoons is Australia’s largest inland waterway, separated from the sea by the sand dunes of Ninety Mile Beach. The region is popular with surfers, fishermen and people who just like messing about in boats. There are load of tours and options to hire boats in the local area. Both Sale and Lakes Entrance (www.discovereastgippsland.com.au/supporting-information/visitor-centres) on the highway have useful information centres. Raymond Island is renowned for its koala bears, and Rotamah Island is particularly interesting for birdwatching. There is also the Croajingolong National Park (www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/croajingolong-national-park) encompassing over 100 km of coast and inland. It covers beaches, mountains and forests, and is a UNESCO listed site for its ecosystem’s biodiversity.
