Other sights
Zoos, aquariums and cathedrals
We deliberately give the following a brief mention because we don’t think they deserve as much of your time as the rest:
Paddington (‘Paddo’): an attractive residential area 4 km east of the city centre with Victorian terraced houses; if you’re going there, make for Five Ways, a meeting of several streets with interesting shops, the Royal pub and several good eating places.
Taronga Zoo a short ferry ride from Circular Quay Jetty 5 in a fine harbourside location. It’s up a short hill (bus or cable car to top); open daily 9.30 am to 4.30 pm, entry fee (www.taronga.org.au/taronga-zoo)
Koala Park: – see the photo – on Castle Hill Road, West Pennant Hills, north-west Sydney; open 9 am to 5 pm, entry fee (www.koalapark.com.au)
Sydney Aquarium: at the east end of Pyrmont Bridge. Australian specialities including sharks and rays, viewed from underwater walkways; open daily 9.00 am to 8.00 pm, entry fee (www.sydneyaquarium.com.au)
St Andrew’s Cathedral: across the open space off George Street, builtin the 1870s and housing an unusual computerized organ.
