Polignano a Mare
Knobbled courtyards
On Route 16, 35 km South East of Bari. Its view from seaward is reproduced on many a picture postcard of Puglia and you hurry to get one last snap before the dilapidated houses collapse into the wedge-shaped gorges which are pitted with caves like slabs of Emmental cheese. But Polignano has trembled on this brink for centuries. The crisscrossing alleyways, knobbled courtyards and massive 12thC bell-tower of the Chiesa Madre are safe enough. There are a few restaurants, a campsite and a lido. Outside the town on the Adriatic highway is a tourist village with sports facilities.
