Richardson Grove State Park
Towering redwoods
On Hwy-101, 7 miles South of Garberville. Sunlight becomes twilight as Hwy-101 passes through Richardson Grove State Park, where 800 acres of towering redwood trees form a natural canopy, blocking the sun and casting an evocative stillness. The park’s three campsites, occupied by half a million visitors annually, do less for the peaceful mood. To enjoy the park fully, leave the busier parts and explore on foot. Details of the park’s trails, varying from arduous hikes to short walks, are available from the Visitor Center beside the highway.
Despite the impression they give, the trees of Richardson Grove are not the State’s tallest redwoods – even higher specimens occur in Humboldt Redwood State Park and Redwood National Park.
