Woolfe Creek Crater National Park
Meteorite crater
130 km south of Hall’s Creek; www.parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au/wolfe-creek-crater. The meteorite that landed here aeons ago made an impact big enough to have destroyed any city in the modern world. It left a crater over 800 m wide and 50 m deep, the second largest on Earth. According to local Aborigine legend, this was where a monstrous serpent emerged from the entrails of the earth. Like many such spots, the facts (and the myths) are rather more interesting than the site itself – unless seen from the air.
After the Earth eventually passes through another large meteorite shower, this is what London, Chicago or Frankfurt could look like.
You might recognise the name Woolfe Creek from the Australian horror film of the same name. If you’ve seen it you understand when we say visitors beware.
