Adria
Site of a Greek-Roman city
On Routes 309 and 443, 65 km south west of Venice. Here you stand on the site of a Graeco-Roman city which gave its name to the Adriatic Sea. The town is in no way remarkable except for its interesting archaeological museum containing chariot-wheels and two equine skeletons. East and south are plainlands of silt carried down by the mighty Po and other important rivers – Reno of Bologna, Adige of Bolzano and Brenta of Padua, all winding to the sea within a short distance of each other. The silt choked Adria’s harbour and the small town is now 22 km inland.
