Caudebec-en-Caux
Fine church, survivor of WW2
The wonderful Eglise de Notre-Dame somehow survived when most of Caudebec was flattened in June 1940. You could spend hours outside the flamboyant fa͵cade gaining a knowledge of medieval costume, as modelled by a jolly host of carved friars, bankers and bards, assisted by fashionable young beauties and ample matrons. Inside, the 16thC stained glass windows are exceptional: a magnificent Tree of Jesse in a cloud of gold on the left; half a dozen biblical tales including Bread of Heaven descending like giant snowflakes, and a turmoil of horses in a velvety Red Sea on the right. Above the entrance, a grand procession of local worthies and portly monks parades before a back-drop of period architecture.
A short walk away, the 13thC Maison des Templiers houses a local history museum; and you could pop into the MuséoSeine with its maritime memorabilia.
