Mountain transport, Heavenly Valley
Summer and winter
Twenty square miles of the 10,000-ft high slopes that rise behind South Lake Tahoe are occupied by Heavenly Valley (http://www.skiheavenly.com), the country’s largest ski resort. Heavenly Valley relies for its summertime bread and butter on a cable car, which – for a disconcertingly steep fee – brings camera-carrying tourists and diners to the restaurants perched dizzily on a hillside 2,000 feet above lake level. They’ve also diversified and offer summer tubing (sitting in a large circular inflatable ring and drifting down a waterway), zip lining and other adventure sports to lure the out-of-season tourists.
