Ravello
Amalfi coast gem, ‘discovered’ by the British
Victorian philanthropists Francis and Sophia Reid ‘discovered it, provided a water supply and a school and died in the knowledge that the ravellesi would love and honour the British for ever. The arrival of a different kind of foreigner, led by Jacqueline Kennedy and the Radziwills, shook but did not destroy that sentimental loyalty. The small township trembles on the bluff above Atrani. From Amalfi, energetic walkers do the climb on woodland paths in two hours. The Reids gave Ravello fertile gardens, prolific shrubbery and seats on the sloping piazza. They restored villas, terraces and statuary. Romanesque duomo and cloisters date from the 11thC. Villa Cimbrone has a cool garden and a famous belvedere. Arabo-Norman Vill Rufolo was the inspiration for the magic garden in Wagner’s Parsifal.
