Segestra
Truly ancient remains
One of the oldest archaeological sites, traditionally associated with immigrants from Troy (Virgil located the Aeneid in Sicily). A Greek theatre of rough-cut stones (3rdC BC), turned towards the distant coast, overlooks hills where the earliest known settlers lived about 1,000 BC. On a plateau, blending wonderfully with surrounding land forms and colours, stands the stateliest of Doric temples (5thC BC), complete though roofless, perfect in beauty and silence – until the State built a railway junction. The Transport Ministry has gone one better by merging two motorways at the same spot. Many touring buses visit Segesta but with the continual clanking of rail trucks and the roar of traffic it hardly matters now whether you are alone or in a crowd.
