Wave Rock
Petrified tidal wave
About 340 km east of Perth outside the small settlement of Huden. It’s a long way to go, but this is probably the most original natural phenomenon in the state (www.waverock,com.au). Imagine a tidal wave, petrified just as it’s about to break over land. This granite tidal wave is 15 m high and well over 100 m long. The rock has vertical streaking, caused by rain water, which adds eerily to the wave effect. It’s a great photo opportunity, and because of its remoteness attracts fewer visitors than one might expect. There are other odd rock formations in the area, such as Hippo’s Yawn, a short kilometre trek away. Down the road at Mulka’s Cave and Bates Cave there are Aborigine wall paintings.
