About South of Perth
This region used to be Western Australia’s best-kept secret. Now the secret is out, and many consider it to be one of the most picturesque regions in the entire continent.
Here there’s something for all tastes. The coastline is spectacular, and has beaches which are great for surfing, as well as sheltered sandy coves which are ideal for children. Inland there are some of the classiest vineyards in Australia, producing quality rather than quantity. Margaret River County is a favourite region with Perth’s ‘mappies’ (middle-aged professionals), and the wineries here are now complemented by a liberal sprinkling of gourmet restaurants. Those who fancy something more energetic will want to explore the famous local caves. These extend for miles, some with subterranean lakes and other interesting features.
But the main sight in the region is undoubtedly the historic town of Albany. This was the earliest European settlement in Western Australia, and still retains a distinct atmosphere of its own. Albany is set on a hillside overlooking a protected sound which is larger than Sydney Harbour.
You can see the best places to visit easily in two or three days, but it’s worth allowing double this if you want to sample the sights (and the wine) at your leisure.
TRANSPORT
All the main towns in the area are connected by regular bus services, try Greyhound www.greyhound.com.au. But easily the best way to get around it is, of course, by car.
