Perugia
Largest of the hill-top cities
The biggest hill-top city of them all, pedestrianized on top, difficult to park in down below. Animated air is enlivened with fresh-faced students from languages university. Old Perugia, a sort of medieval Pompeii, is enclosed in a 16thC papal citadel with a garden-belvedere on top. Carvings on elaborate 13thC fountain in Piazza Grande are attributed to the Pisani brothers. Perugino is the top artist. Duccio did the bas-reliefs on the San Bernardino oratory. This is a fine place to linger in but uphill streets and stairways are a test of stamina.
