Purnululu National Park
Jaw-dropping gorges and rock scenery
Some 200 km south of Kununurra, and 50 km east off the Great Northern Highway by 4WD; open April to Dec only. The park (www.parks.dpaw.wa.gov/park/purnululu) contains the Bungle Bungle Mountains, which have some of the most spectacular gorges and rock scenery of all Australia. But it’s difficult to get to, and the gorges involve some tough hiking. You can pick up a map at the Ranger’s Residence. If you want to see it the easy way, take the helicopter ride from Turkey Creek on the main highway – www.discoveraustralia.com.au/tours.
The caves, striped rock formations, creek beaches and palm oases of this region were virtually unknown until the early 1980s, when they were ‘discovered’ by a roving film crew. They have since become one of the outback’s major attractions.
